Daily news is news that occurs each day, usually reported by newspapers and other media outlets. It can encompass a wide range of topics, including politics, business, sports, and culture. It can also include opinion pieces and editorials that offer different points of view about the events being discussed. Some of the most popular daily news sources are online, but many people still read traditional newspaper articles as well.
Founded in 1878, the New York Daily News is the city’s hometown newspaper and once had one of the highest circulations for any daily newspaper in the country. The paper became famous over the years for its zesty headlines (such as “Ford to City: Drop Dead”), gossip and city coverage, and a roster of star columnists that included Jimmy Breslin and Pete Hamill. It has won several Pulitzer Prizes over the years, including a shared award for its work with ProPublica to uncover how the city used an obscure law to force tenants out of their homes.
In the past year, the Daily News has struggled with declining print advertising and circulation and shifts in the way that people consume news and information. In late 2022, the Daily News announced that it would merge with Tronc, the owner of the Chicago Tribune and other major newspapers, to try to compete better with digital rivals such as Google and Facebook. The Daily News will operate as an independent publication until the merger is complete, with some staff retaining their jobs while others are transferred to Tronc.
